Afterload: The pressure ventricular contraction needs to beat.

  • If you still don’t understand what afterload means, take a look at this illustration. The ventricle contracts against all the pressure the aorta has, including the tension from its walls and the blood it contains. The more pressure there is agains the ventricle, the stronger the ventricle should be. A weaken ventricle, unable to beat afterload is one of the main reasons heart failure occurs.
